Out of nowhere this year, I decided it would be the year I would start a vegetable garden. I laugh at my self a little; I have no house plants, my landscaping is a mess. The only greenery I have manged to keep alive is a Lucky Bamboo plant that was given to me the day my son was born almost 2 years ago. It’s still alive and looks great even in my neglect. I spent hours on the internet trying to come up with the best design for a planter box. One trip to Home Depot, I had almost everything in my rolling cart that I needed and then I started seeing all the guy’s guys loading up their carts. Suddenly I broke out in a cold sweat and ditched my cart. There is no way I can build this thing on my own. I have no idea what I’m doing. (Sorry to the Home Depot employee who had to return everything in their rightful places.)
So you know what comes next, right? “Dad?” Bless his heart, my dad always comes to my rescue when I need him. From forgetting my lunch at home 2 out of 5 days a week in 3rd grade to my house pouring water into my bedroom (houses aren’t supposed to leak, right?)… my dad has always been there to help me. My new passion for a veggie garden was no different. We (*cough* he) built me an awesome 7×7 planter, complete with chicken wire to keep the pesky bunnies at bay. The best part; it’s green. The cedar has not been treated with chemicals and all my plants are organic! The whole point is for my family to enjoy fresh, chemical-free food. It’s something I hope that my son and I will do together next year too, creating memories together.
My garden has 6 tomato plants of 5 different varieties, cucumber plants, peppers, strawberries, green and red leaf lettuce, strawberries, radishes, basil and other herbs we enjoy cooking with. I hope to get a lot of tomatoes for canning in the fall but so far I only have 4 tomatoes growing and my plants are not as tall as the neighbors. (Well, she did plant hers 3 weeks before I did but still! Come on tomatoes, keep up with the Joneses.) Seeing as though I have no idea what I’m doing, I thought it could be entertaining to post my first veggie garden journey online. People like a good chuckle, I think.
So here goes, here is my first picture tour of my humble little garden. I know I need to weed. You don’t need to point it out. And I would plant things a little different next time around. It’s all about learning from my mistakes. The most entertaining plant is the climbing cucumber. I’m so intrigued with the way it’s tentacles wrap around the chicken wire to climb. One of the plants wasn’t climbing so I helped it along. It was like a Sci-Fi movie. I encouraged it a bit to grab onto the chicken wire and it did. I swear I even heard it say thank you to me for my efforts. Also, can anyone tell me why the tomatoes are cracking on one of my plants?
